Introduction
LG showed off their new LFX31945ST door-in-door fridge at the 2012 Consumer Electronics Show. Amidst the “smart” fridges with touch screens and WiFi, this fridge had a simple innovation: a smaller door on the front of the fridge that allows access to a limited selection of shelves. One can store juice, milk or beer in there and reach them without opening up the entire fridge. Whether the innovation will become popular — and how much it will cost — remains to be seen.

Proving that counter-depth fridges can perform just as well as their full-sized big brothers, the LG LFX31945ST delivers performance that ranges from adequate in some areas to outstanding in others. It manages to provide solid temperature consistency, decent humidity control, and an excellent freezer that outperforms many full-sized versions. At the end of the day, though, it is still a counter-depth fridge, offering less storage space than even some of the smallest, and cheapest, full-sized options. It’s definitely something to keep in mind when determining whether the full MSRP of $1609, or even a sale price of $1400, make this aesthetically pleasing little fridge from New Zealand worth the investment. With an MSRP of $1399, you’d expect really solid performance from the LG LFX31945ST. What wind up with is a decent fridge and a solid vegetable drawer. Unfortunately, you also get stuck with a fridge that hits you in the electric bill and a freezer that will burn more than it will freeze.
