What to Look For
A large family needs a large refrigerator. With many hungry mouths to feed, you need the proper space to store that big pile of groceries.
If you look closely, you may notice that our figures for usable space are smaller than what the manufacturers report. Manufacturer numbers ignore shelves, drawers, and the like; the numbers you see on a company's spec sheet skip over the fact that not all of that space is usable. Our numbers take the obstacles into account for a more accurate assessment.
That said, one way to maximize the amount of usable space is to go for a model without a water dispenser and icemaker. Although these are convenient, they take up a lot of space in the freezer section, reducing the amount of frozen food one may store. Many manufacturers offer similar models with and without ice and water, so this can be an easy way to save money and get more space.
